Carmen Cheng is a private client lawyer specialising in family law and succession planning.


She advises on all aspects relating to family law including divorce and ancillary relief proceedings, children’s custody, care and control and access applications, and financial provision in cases of children born to unmarried couples.


Apart from family law, she also advises on succession planning and is experienced in contentious and non-contentious probate and trust matters. She advises on trust and estate planning including preparation of Wills, trust matters and has also handled both contentious and non-contentious court applications relating to estates and trusts.


Carmen began her career at Mayer Brown (formerly Mayer Brown JSM) as a trainee under our Principal’s supervision and spent almost a decade at the law firm. She subsequently joined a financial institution where she worked with UHNW families on family governance and family enterprise succession for inter-generational wealth transfer. She re-joined our Principal in the family team in September 2019.


Carmen is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. She is admitted as a solicitor in both Hong Kong and England & Wales.


Experience

  • Advising on applications for maintenance under the Guardianship of Minors Ordinance and the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Ordinance.

  • Advising on applications for appointment of committee of estate for mentally incapacitated persons under Part II of the Mental Health Ordinance.

  • Advising local charities on a pro-bono basis in respect of children issues under Hong Kong law in furtherance of their existing or new initiatives.

  • Drawing up wills for UHNW individuals with assets in various jurisdictions.
